Most hybrids on the road use one of two battery chemistries. Here’s the short version.
Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH)
Found in most Toyota and Lexus hybrids. Proven and durable — typically 8–10 years or 100,000–180,000 miles. It generates heat, so the cooling fan and its filter matter: a clogged fan is the #1 battery killer we see.
Lithium-Ion (Li-ion)
Lighter and stronger — used in newer hybrids and every EV. Often lasts 10–12 years or 150,000–200,000+ miles, and holds its charge better when the car sits unused.
